Flow
An original miniature from my collection Where the River Flows
Miniature landscape oil paintings in antique frames
Details
-
I hand-dyed each piece of cotton canvas with natural indigo and marigold (a quiet nod to my past life as an ethical fashion designer where we often incorporated these natural plant dyes)
-
Painted with non-toxic oil paints crafted from earth pigments and plant-based minerals (hand mixed by me) —a rare alternative in a market where most oil paints and solvents are highly toxic and can off-gas indoors
- 5x7" canvas in a 6.5x8.5" antique frame
Inspiration:
Painted in nature of nature from nature
These pieces were inspired by lush Midwestern summer rivers and my personal growth journey toward following God's path for me. The idea from this collection was sparked by Ezekial 47 - "Where the river flows, everything will live..." a reminder to surrender to the current of the river instead of walking upstream with my own two feet.
Blurring the lines with my past career in ethical fashion, I used plant dyes to dye the cotton and linen canvas' before stretching onto wooden bars. Portions of the sky and river aren’t painted—they’re revealed. I intentionally left portions of the naturally dyed canvas—soft indigos and earthy greens—exposed as negative space, allowing the sky and river to emerge from the material itself. Instead of painting over those areas, I let the fabric and plant dyes speak to form the landscape.
The mini canvases were cut from scraps left over from preparing larger works—originally just test studies. But after many requests, I’ve framed and released them as finished miniatures in their own right.
