Vision

Painting nature / in nature / from nature

Over time, I’ve come to realize that what comforts us most about nature is its effortless nostalgia. In nature, we’re not asked to hustle or perform—we’re invited to simply be. I try to hold onto that truth in my work. My paintings are an attempt to capture softness, stillness, and an old-world quality that reminds us of something we may have forgotten: that beauty doesn’t demand anything from us. It already lives here.

Through this practice, I hope to offer moments of peace—both for myself and for those who view or collect my work. It’s a slow, mindful process, rooted in gratitude and awe. A quiet collaboration with the earth.

My practice

I paint scenes of nature while being fully immersed in it—often outdoors, surrounded by wind, sun, birdsong, and the very landscapes I’m capturing. Inspired by God’s green earth, my work is rooted in stillness, softness, and sacred attention. I’m drawn to the rhythms of the natural world: the pull of the moon, the rise of the sun, the changing seasons, the hum of bees, the quiet magic of our bodies.

My paintings are an expression of reverence—for the interconnectedness of all things, and for the peace we find when we allow ourselves to simply be. There’s something deeply nostalgic about nature: it asks nothing of us but our presence. No planning, no rushing, no need to prove. Just being. I believe that’s how God calls us to show up—not stressed or striving, but grounded, open, and connected. Through my art, I hope to hold space for that kind of return—to self, to spirit, to stillness.

Process

As a way of honoring the land and connecting to God’s creation, I source my materials from the earth itself.

PAINT: After discovering how toxic the oil and watercolor paints I'd been using for over 20 years were, I began making my own natural paints from finely ground earth pigments made from rocks, plants, and minerals like indigo, marigolds, madder, and ochre. The process of making my own paints is so grounding and makes me feel grateful for the little things. The slowness of enjoying the process.

DYE: I dye raw cotton + linen canvas' using plant dyes before hand stretching onto wooden bars before I begin painting - all while immersed in nature.

CONNECTION & REFLECTION: This process is more than painting—it’s prayer, presence, and communion. It fills me with gratitude for the sacredness in every leaf, stone, and color.

Sustainability is central to how I work. I reclaim used canvases and materials whenever possible, giving them new life and keeping them out of landfills. I use scrapped paper, leftover paint, and found tools. For printed goods like wallpaper, wrapping paper, and art prints, I partner with eco-conscious print-to-order companies that use recyclable paper and soy-based inks.

Honoring my past

In 2012 at 23 years old, I learned a shocking statistic, that underwear is the most requested yet least donated item of clothing in global organizations serving women and youth. I started my company MADI Apparel based on a passion to help fulfill that need.

I designed a line of staple basics, ethically made by cut and sew teams in my city. We were part of just 3% of the world's brands to pay a living wage to our cutters, sewers and entire team. For every item sold, we donated a pair of underwear, donating over 10,000 pairs to requesting non-profits.

Featured by some of the world's biggest media publications like Forbes, Washington Post, BBC News, Nylon, Men's Journal, NY Mag, Brides, The Knot and Cause Artist and carried in the Kansas City International Airport plus Von Maur department stores, our products made from eco friendly fabrics are religiously worn and cherished by customers all over the world.

In 2023, I rebranded our flagship store and brand from MADI Apparel to Slow Motion Goods with a nod to mental health awareness in an effort to champion the idea of encouraging customers to slow down in an increasingly loud and complicated society.

After a decade of stewarding the ship, I ultimately made the decision to close our online store, brick-and-mortar shop and wholesale operations in the summer of 2024 to focus on my health, happiness, family and art practice.

Today, I often merge my ethical fashion and fine art worlds together through the respect of "process" and making things slowly, naturally + toxic-free.

Studies

Stay curious, loves...

I'm a forever student of the world and firm believer that we're never too late to learn something new. In the summer of 2022, my husband and I spent the summer in Italy as I returned back to study at Florence University of the Arts for the second time.

I'm honored to carry dual degrees: a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts with an emphasis in painting and a Journalism degree from the University of Missouri.

My muses

The women who came before me inspire me. Specifically my incredible golden-hearted mother and my maternal grandma (who passed) - both talented artists, keep me grateful for the gift of art that we all share. Thank you to all of my ancestors, my husband, dad and brother - my biggest fans - for cheering me on.
