In sumi-e (meaning ink painting,) you only get ONE shot. So this process was full of many many trials. Whatever the hand, body, mind, spirit guides you to do, you do. Since there's no way to make changes to ink on paper because of its permanence, it's a necessity to get into a meditative mindset before beginning. It' a pretty cool practice that artists have been using for thousands of years and it's an honor to take part in this practice. I couldn't drive or lift anything for six weeks, so to get some fresh air my mom was walking my dog while I gently walked alongside. When we got back to the house, a bat was hanging by one foot next to my front door...in broad daylight...\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan data-sheets-root=\"1\"\u003eThe bat stayed all day and night I think to bring me a message. The Hebrew word for \"bat\" is atalef. In the Bible, the word \"atalleph\" is used to describe bats, and it implies \"flying in the dark.\" Bats are comfortable in the dark, they symbolize death in many cultures. But death doesn't have to be scary. He said he had a gift for me. He handed me a small cloth parcel, and I unwrapped it to discover a crystal gold butterfly and a small poem (scroll for a photo.) Overjoyed was an understatement. At 10 weeks, I went in for my first sonogram appointment, only to have my world come crashing down. My sweet baby had been growing just great but no longer had a heartbeat. Additionally, the sonographer found a six inch cyst (roughly the size of a deflated soccer ball) on my left ovary. I was referred to an oncologist as they were worried about cancer in the cyst or ovary. A few weeks later, I had a D\u0026amp;C surgery to remove the pregnancy that was no longer. I sat on the edge of the hospital bed in the intake room before they brought me into surgery. I was all alone and terrified, clutching a book for comfort and attempting to hold back tears. After the baby was removed, I woke up to an angel of a human (a nurse from St. Lukes) comforting me. Her love was so radiating that tears fell down my cheeks. I may not have been pregnant long, but it brought me comfort to know I was still a mom.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis painting is dedicated to the little one I lost and to anyone who's experienced miscarriage. I know now that God made me a mom just briefly for a reason. The pregnancy brought my husband and I to the top of a mountain and then smack on our faces on the floor of the pitch black valley with no stairs to get up. The baby taught us so much, we grew so much. My acupuncturist once said, all souls are given a big purpose by God, but some just have a little less time to achieve that grand purpose. Ironically, I spent my last night recovering in the hospital on July 4th...Independence Day. I sat alone in my room and from the windows I watched fireworks span the length of the horizon in the distance. I felt grateful that I was alive. I rushed down to find the pipes had burst because the heater had broken from such icy temps. Because of the holiday, it took a few days to get the heater repaired, and in that time, our plants - that we'd been growing in the shop for some eight years (!) had been shocked by the cold and were starting to wither. They'd been so full, so abundant and I gave one last ditch effort to save them. With a leap of faith (and knowing I couldn't make it worse!) I cut each of the stems back to nubs. And waited...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWeeks later, the plants were growing new healthy bright green leaves like crazy! In a few more weeks, I'd be undergoing a much more invasive surgery with a four night hospital stay to remove a giant 6-inch cyst and my left ovary. So I waited, and I did anything I could to take care of myself. One day, I was in my favorite park on a warm sunny summer day.
